Sculptures in the Garden is an annual outdoor art exhibition that has been captivating art lovers in Mudgee, New South Wales for more than 11 years. The exhibition has become a platform for both established and emerging artists to showcase their works to the public while having the opportunity to be selected for acquisition and non-acquisition prizes.
One of the most exciting aspects of Sculptures in the Garden is that it offers visitors the chance to see some of the finest public art in regional New South Wales. Each year, the winning artworks of past exhibitions are placed along the Lawson Park Sculpture Walk, which follows the banks of the Cudgegong River. These works, like treasures waiting to be discovered, add to the charm and beauty of the area.
But Sculptures in the Garden is not content with simply showcasing art during their annual exhibition. The committee is dedicated to extending the enjoyment of public art to more residents in the region. In 2022, the committee commissioned two more works to be donated to the Mid-Western Regional Council. These works, 'Second Sun' by Rylstone artist Alex Scheibner and 'Rufus', a corten steel kangaroo by Victorian artist Matt Hill, were installed in Rylstone and Gulgong, respectively.
The generosity of Sculptures in the Garden and the ongoing support of the Mid-Western Regional Council to public art in the region is truly commendable. The installation of 'Second Sun' and 'Rufus' in public spaces means that more people can experience the joy and inspiration that comes from encountering a work of art unexpectedly. The works become a part of the community, inviting people to engage with them, to think about them, and to be moved by them.
Public art has the power to transform communities, to enrich our lives, and to bring us together. The commitment of Sculptures in the Garden and the Mid-Western Regional Council to public art is an example of how cultural initiatives can have a positive impact on regional communities. We should all celebrate and support their efforts to bring more art into our lives, and we should take the time to visit these stunning works of art when we have the chance.
